Getting ready for the off
In November I took part in a charity golf day at the Westgate and Birchington golf club, the idea was to raise cash for the local hospice. Over 90 of us took part on what was a great day not only for the golf but also the weather was great and we raised over £2000 as well.
Just a little distraction on the 9th
On October 6th 2006, 120 of us took to the course at Westgate and Birchington to raise more money for local charitys in Thanet once again, we raised over £7000 this year.
2006 precentation
In only it's second year The Sheila Bowles Challenge Cup took place at the Westgate & Birchington Golf Club in aid of Thanet Cancer Care and Demelza House - Children's Hospice in October and raised in excess £7,000. Following the success of the inaugural competition last year, when over £2000 was raised, it's now set to become an annual event in the Thanet golf calendar.

Plans begun as soon as last years event was over. The number of players and sponsors grew beyond all expectations. Kevin Bowles, whose late mother the competition is named after, said, "We had hoped to get maybe similar numbers to last year (79 players) and maybe a few more sponsors, but we soon realised that local people, players and business's really wanted to get involved and support the day, but to more then triple last years figure is just amazing. Crucial to the success this year was getting Shannon Holdings, who are the main contractor on the Sea Bathing Hospital renovation, on board as the main sponsor and local firm Brown and Mason were also exceptionally generous in their support".

116 golfers played in appalling weather and over 50 local companies sponsored and supported the event.

However the organisers are not resting on their laurels. Next years Sheila Bowles Challenge Cup is already in planning and will take place on Friday 24th August (Bank Holiday Weekend) once again at the Westgate & Birchington Golf Course. Any companies interested in sponsorship opportunities should contact Dave Tappy on 07917 222080

On Saturday 19th April The Red Lion Golf Society had a meal and afternoon out at Dover RFC. Well done to Dover for winning the League in 2007/2008.
